THE Liberal Party has retain the seats of North Sydney and Warringah.
North Sydney federal Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman has declared victory and is currently addressing the party faithful at the Firehouse Hotel in North Sydney.
“I am really happy there was a good swing on the primary and two party preferred vote and I think that is a good reflection of how hard we have been working over the last six months in the community,” Mr Zimmerman said.
“I will be concentrating on the key things I spoke about during the election campaign and that is protecting local environment and getting HMAS Platypus and the urban park completed.
“I also want to focus on getting batter sporting facilities for the region and also establish the region as an innovation hub.”
When asked if had any portfolio ambitions Mr Zimmerman said he still very much the “new boy on the block”.
“My interests remain in transport and cities policy and I will be concentrating on that.
“I will be celebrating the win with my volunteers here and beating off exhaustion because it has been long campaign.”
With close to 60 per cent of the vote counted in North Sydney Mr Zimmerman has more than 60 per cent of the vote after preferences and has just over half the vote on first preferences.
Labor candidate Peter Hayes polled better than expected collecting 37 per cent of vote after preferences while Independent Dr Stephen Ruff and the Greens Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans polled poorly with their first preferences floating around the 13 per cent mark.
All the signs pointed to a Liberal win early in the day with even the pets backing the Liberals on the north shore.
North Sydney was held by Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman with a margin of 15.7 per cent
It was a no-frills campaign so far on the north shore with no major funding announcements made by Labor or Liberal to try and sway voter’s intentions.
Orthopedic surgeon and Independent candidate Dr Stephen Ruff was expected to be Mr Zimmerman’s main challenger for the seat while Mr Fletcher had comparatively little opposition.
While thousands of people across the country enjoyed their democracy sausages after voting, residents in Lane Cove were robbed of the barbecue delicacy with not a snag to be seen at St Michael’s Catholic Church.
There will be regular updates throughout the evening as the votes continue to roll in.
