Penrith: Matthew Dean charged with murder of Mark Walsh, 60, after alleged Union Rd home invasion

A man who allegedly murdered a 60-year-old man during a home invasion in Sydney’s west has been charged after police stopped him while he was driving.

A man has been charged with the murder of 60-year-old Mark Walsh after an alleged home invasion at Penrith.

Police allege two intruders attacked the man in his public housing unit on Union Rd on Saturday, March 8 about 1.30am.

Nepean police found Mr Walsh with significant head injuries during what they allege was a targeted incident in the unit, which is part of a large public housing complex opposite the council car park on Union Rd.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the alleged victim but his condition deteriorated and he died at the scene.

Another resident was present at the time of the incident, but was unharmed and co-operated with police.

A crime scene was established and an investigation under Strike Force Bridgenorth began with the assistance of the homicide squad.

Following extensive inquiries, about 6.10am on Wednesday, detectives stopped a Mitsubishi sedan on Paton St, Merrylands West and arrested 36-year-old Matthew Dean.

He was taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with murder and aggravated break and enter to commit a serious indictable offence.

The Schofields man was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court where no application for bail was made and the case was adjourned to Penrith on May 23.

A search is also under way at a home on Ivy St, Toongabbie.
