A Facebook post warning residents of cats being poisoned cannot be verified by police or local vets.

Residents living near Nepean Hospital were left alarmed by a note found in their letter box saying several cats have been poisoned in the area.

Facebook group Penrith Area Lost and Found Animals yesterday shared the post of the note which had allegedly been dropped in a number of mailboxes.

The note said “a number of cats in the streets near Nepean Hospital have been poisoned with what appears to be rat poison”.

“We were finding sausages left in the streets and in a local park which had injection marks and a soapy smell”, it said.

The note claimed that both police and security at Nepean Hospital had been informed of the incidents.

It finished by encouraging people to “keep your pets safe and make sure they are secure at night”.

The post had been shared 200 times as of 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

However, the Press was unable to verify any reports with Nepean Police and Nepean Hospital could not confirm their security staff was aware of any incidents.

Penrith Veterinary Hospital, South Penrith Vets, Greencross Vets Penrith, and the Nepean Animal Hospital all said they had no records of cats presenting with symptoms of poisoning.

The RSPCA also could not confirm any reports of cats being poisoned near the hospital.

The reports come just months after several poisoning incidents in Sydney’s inner suburbs.

Small pellets of poison were wrapped in raw chicken at Enmore Park in Marrickville, leaving one 11-year-old Shih tzu-cross-poodle needing urgent medical attention last October, and several magpies were killed after eating poisoned meat in Rosebery last September.
