A proposed bouldering facility in Jamisontown could soon be training potential Olympians.
The Climbing Centre wants to expand its footprint under plans lodged with Penrith Council.
The centre, which runs out of Borec Rd, Penrith, has its eyes on an empty unit on York Rd, Jamisontown, for a bouldering-only facility.
Bouldering is the act of climbing on short walls with safety matting underneath, without the use of ropes or harnesses.
The company said in a development application that the $400,000 facility would offer “new and exciting sport and adventure entertainment” to the area.
It is one of the three disciplines in sport climbing, which will make its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
A planner for The Climbing Centre said the bouldering facility could draw Olympic hopefuls to the region.
“As an institution of Penrith, our vision is to establish climbing as a sport in the Penrith community,” he said.
“In conjunction with The Climbing Centre, part of our vision is to create Penrith’s first sport climbing school.
“Our school would offer Olympic structured training programs, coaches, and training facilities.”
The planner said the facility would offer an economic boost to the area.
“We offer local employment, and working in the climbing industry is a great stepping stone to further one’s work experience,” he said.
“Our facility would be the first of its kind in Penrith, attracting climbing enthusiasts from all over the Greater Sydney area.
“Our main customer catchment area spans up to a one-hour drive, and those customers will use Penrith’s hub of cafes, restaurants, and businesses.
“Being part of the Penrith business community for more than 25 years, we take pride in supporting local businesses and economy.”
The Climbing Centre has been contacted for further comment.
