A Penrith councillor and loyal customer of a popular burger shop is pushing to have a commemorative plaque installed to honour the owners after their alleged murders.
Councillor Reece Nuttall, who grew up frequenting the Buzzy Bees Burger House, revealed his plans for a lasting tribute to owners Heang Kim Gau and Hoa Tek Chiem at a meeting on Monday night.
The couple, affectionately known as “Ma and Pa”, were stabbed to death inside the Cambridge Park business they had owned and run for three decades on November 30.
One of their sons, Allan Chiem, 31, has since been charged with their murders and remains before the courts.
The deaths of Mr Chiem, 69, and Mrs Gau, 68, sent shockwaves through the community and sparked an outpouring of grief, including a community vigil held outside the takeaway shop a week after the alleged murders.
During Monday night’s meeting, Cr Nuttall said he had attended the vigil and “heard heartfelt stories about the profound impact Tek and Kim had on the lives of so many”.
“Their warmth, generosity and dedication to the community shone brightly in every memory shared that night,” he said.
Cr Nuttall said he grew up as a customer of the couple, recalling the way they turned the burger shop into a community hub.
“Their kindness and care brought people together and their legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone that they touched,” he said.
He then revealed he was committed to a plan for a commemorative plaque to honour the slain couple.
“This plaque will serve as a lasting tribute to their incredible lives and their legacy they will leave behind in Penrith,” he said.
“I will work closely with council officers to make this happen for our community.”
He then offered his condolences to everyone affected by their deaths.
“Let us remember Tek and Kim for their compassion and dedication and for the powerful sense of community they cultivated.”
