An occupant of a double-storey public housing villa at Parramatta was not home when fire broke out of the George St property on Friday morning.
More than 30 Fire and Rescue NSW personnel responded to the fire at 6.15am when crews from Parramatta, Rydalmere, Wentworthville, Silverwater and Guildford forced entry and contained the blaze over the next 45 minutes.
“The ground floor was well alight,’’ Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
“The upper level was heat and smoke damaged but there was no fire damage; but it’s pretty sooty up there.
“They’ve done a thorough search and they couldn’t find a person.’’
One household from the neighbouring property had to be evacuated but the fire did not spread into the adjoining home, which Supt Dewberry said was without power.
The cause of the blaze is still being determined but firefighters have been kept busy responding to 299 home fires recently.
During June in NSW, there were five fatalities. Twenty six fires started in the bedroom, 112 in the kitchen and 17 in the lounge room, with the remainder in other parts of properties.
“People are most vulnerable in their bedroom so we need to make sure people have these working smoke alarms,’’ Supt Dewberry said.
“And never leave cooking unattended.’’
