Sydney wild weather: Manly to Shelly walk collapses and toilet block washed away

FAIRY BOWER rock pool’s iconic sculpture has been damaged in the wild weather and parts of the Manly to Shelly walkway and a toilet block is swept away on Sydney’s northern beaches.

THE walkway from Manly to Shelly Beach has been badly damaged by huge waves, which washed away the toilet block, tore apart the concrete path and left the iconic sculpture at Fairy Bower rock pool broken.

Businesses along the water front were also trashed, with windows smashed, while homeowners reported waves crashing through their properties on Sunday night.

Mark Kelly, 52, said police had stopped people from walking along the Manly to Shelly walkway yesterday morning because it had been “annihilated”.

However, some people were still trying to access the path and one man was pictured slipping over.

“The toilet block has been completely washed away,” said Mr Kelly, who lives with partner Anouk.

“The three shops have been totally smashed up, windows broken.

“The sea wall is very damaged and the path in places is very dangerous and unsafe.

“There are quite dangerous surges with 2-3ft waves coming over the edge.”

Mr Kelly, who lives along the walkway at Fairy Bower, said waves smashed through his back doors, sending water careering into the bedroom on the lower floor from a round 8pm to 11pm last night.

Luckily, he was able to move most of his possessions upstairs before the waves smashed through, there’s damage to the a couch, doors and floors.

Mr Kelly, who runs Global Surf Industry, said this morning he found slabs of concrete from the path in his garden.

“They must weigh half a tonne each,” he said.

Many beachfront properties were still at risk today as the heavy seas continued to pound the coast and many of them have been severely eroded.
