Northern beaches cafes are serving acai, pitaya and raw granola as trendy breakfast bowls

FORGET bacon and eggs, breakfast has gone healthy and comes in trendy bowls. Try pitaya, raw activated granola and acai.

KICKSTART the day with a healthy breakfast bowl.

This week’s Foodie Friday highlights breakfast with a difference.

Manly cafe Bare Naked Bowls opened last July and has answered the call for low-carb breakfasts with its own light and fruity bowls.

The star ingredient is Brazilian superfood, acai.

Cafe owners Josh and Ashley Porteous serve the frozen purple fruit with the hard-to-say name six ways.

The Market Lane cafe also had a frozen superfruit that could become even more popular than acai, Ashley Porteous said.

“Dragon fruit could be the next big trend,” she said.

“People are attracted to it because it is so pretty.”

Dragon fruit or pitaya, comes from a cactus and is already all the rage in LA.

Bare Naked Bowl’s bright pink fruit is sourced from ­Vietnam. It is blended with almond milk, mango and ­banana and served semi-­frozen, like a slushie. It is topped with homemade nut granola, chia seeds and bananas.

Bare Naked Bowls gives back too. The couple donate 10 per cent of the proceeds to Josh Porteous’ charity, The International Brothers and Sisters House, which helps youngsters in Cambodia, Tanzania and Nepal.

Native Feel Real, Manly’s first raw-food cafe, has no coffee, no dairy, no refined sugar and no animal protein.

It does have raw granola bowls made with sunflower seeds, cashews and walnuts.

Ingredients are activated to aid digestion, cafe owner Betania Barkway said. “Soaking the nuts in water opens up the enzymes protecting the nuts, so that it helps digestion.”

Granola is served with homemade almond milk and coco yoghurt.

Native’s food philosophy focuses on food preparation using undressed, unrefined food that’s not heated above 44 degrees, Ms Barkway said.

If you’re going to the organic food markets at Frenchs Forest at the weekend, look out for Two Girls One Bowl. Greta Thurgood and Ruth Wellsmore position themselves near the entrance where they have been selling their prepared acai bowls sprinkled with a variety of toppings including homemade fig and maple granola since October 2015.

The most popular bowl is the nut butter bee bowl, Ms Thurgood said.

“It’s different to other people’s acai bowls,” she said.

“We make ours with organic peanut butter and super-­nutritious bee pollen.”

The detox acai bowl blended with activated charcoal for digestion was another favourite, Ms Thurgood said.
