Latest Bureau of Health Information report reveals increase in hospital emergency admissions

Hospitals on the beaches see a rise in emergencies, according to the latest statistics available. However, patients were largely happy with the service they received.

Hospitals  on the northern beaches saw a significant rise in the number of emergencies at the end of last year, according to the Bureau of Health Information.

Mona Vale Hospital saw around an extra 500 emergencies in the last quarter of 2015, from October to December, compared to the previous quarter from July to September.

While, Manly Hospital was up 300, on the previous quarter.

The Bureau of Health says its Hospital Quarterly statistics shows the overall number of people visiting NSW emergency departments in October to December 2015 was the highest ever in a quarter.

During the period, more than 664,000 patients attended an emergency department in NSW, an increase of almost 12,000 compared to the same period in 2014.

Mona Vale followed this trend seeing 8762 emergencies in the last quarter compared with 8433 in the same period in 2014.

But, Manly Hospital saw fewer emergency patients, with 6100 in the last quarter of 2015, compared with 6316 the previous year.

On average emergency patients began receiving treatment within six minutes at both hospitals.

However, those deemed as non-urgent had a significantly longer wait, with some at Mona Vale waiting more than two hours and 20 minutes.

A patient survey saw positive results for both hospitals in regards to staff and overall treatment.

A North Sydney Local Health District spokesperson said they were pleased.

“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff.”
