The biggest eyesore on the northern beaches will be developed into a $50 million community health centre at Brookvale.

Premier Mike Baird took the Manly Daily on a tour of the vacant block opposite Warringah Mall, sharing his vision of a four-storey health centre employing 200 staff.

“There’s no doubt this is the worst eyesore on the northern beaches and it’s a proud moment to be able to turn it into a world-class facility to suit our world-class staff,” Mr Baird said.

“(In) 23 years, I can’t remember it being anything other than a neglected site.”

The 5000sq m site, on the corner of Pittwater Rd and William St, was purchased by the State Government last month, to settle in December, with work scheduled to start in 2015.

Called the Southern Community Health Centre, it will include subacute services for mental health, rehabilitation and breast screening.

“You can’t find a better-connected site in terms of public transport and accessibility,” Mr Baird said.

Northern Beaches Redevelopment project manager Anthony Manning said when completed, the site would play a key role in healthcare, with community centres in Mona Vale and Dalwood, to support the new Northern Beaches Hospital in Frenchs Forest.
