Celebrate National Burger Day with a meat pattie on a bun

What better way to celebrate National Burger Day than with a delicious, meaty monster?

Love burgers? Then it’s time to celebrate Australia’s enduring love affair with meat patties in a bun. Today it is National Burger Day.

Peninsula burger fans have plenty of choice including local hero JB & Sons and Merivale’s Papi Chulo.

Papi Chulo can claim to have Merivale’s best burger.

The $20 burger beat four other burgers during the March into Merivale burger competition.

“It is a pretty good burger, I’m biased because I work here,” head chef Nick Imgraben said. “I love it and have to stop myself from eating one every day.”

In a world of tricked-up burgers, the Papi Chulo burger is more traditional to its heritage.

It is made with seasoned ground brisket and chuck from Vics Meats. It is served with American cheese, pickles, iceberg lettuce, sliced onion, heirloom tomatoes, secret burger sauce and Japanese mayo.

Papi Chulo won’t be doing deals on national burger day because burgers are half-price at the Manly restaurant on Monday nights.

Freshwater small bar J B & Sons will be doing a National Burger Day special, co owner George McLean said. “We are offering all burgers for $10 during an extended happy hour from three to 6pm today,” he said.

The Freshwater small bar and burger joint has a number of burgers including its classic style cheeseburger called The John.

The secret to a good burger is the meat, Mr McLean said.

“We make ours fresh each day with brisket and chuck from the local butcher,” he said.

Other peninsula burgers of note include Dee Why Hotel’s Trufflenator and its new Greek-style burger the Zeus; as well as BenBry Burgers, which has a stall at A Taste of Manly this weekend.
