AVALON residents say they are relieved something is finally being done to fix a dangerous intersection where a pedestrian was hit on Wednesday morning.

Roads and Maritime Services began upgrading the dangerous spot at Barrrenjoey Rd and Avalon Parade last night.

Resident Amelia St John Kennedy, who was hit by a car six weeks ago while cycling, said it was only a matter of time before someone was killed and while she was sad the upgrades were not done a long time ago, people will be protected.

“I’m so relieved this will protect others and maybe even save a life. I’m so grateful to the power of the voice of the Northern Beaches community that can create positive change,” she said.

Among the long list of works there will be changes to the traffic lights so eastbound motorists on Avalon Parade turning right on to Barrenjoey Rd will be held by a red arrow.

There will also be the installation of a traffic light on a mast arm on the eastern side of Barrenjoey Rd to increase visibility of the light for southbound motorists.

And 15m of pedestrian fencing will be installed and the “left turn on red” sign will be removed for eastbound motorists on Avalon Parade.

Meanwhile, the pedestrian who was hit this week is in a stable condition at Royal North Shore hospital.

An ambulance was called to the scene around 8am on Wednesday after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a car. The man, believed to be in his mid 20s, sustained head injuries and was flown to hospital.
