A COWARD punch attack in McDonald’s left two young men in hospital on Australia Day night, police say.
The pair, both 21, were queuing for food when a man knocked both of them to the ground in an unprovoked attack. One was left with a broken leg and is still in hospital.
The female manager of the Cremorne restaurant stepped in to stop the attacker and he ran from the scene.
“She came out and stood in between to stop him which was impressive and appropriate to protect them,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mike Birley from North Sydney Police.
The incident happened just before 11pm and lasted about eight seconds.
The attacker punched the first young man to the face and knocked him to the ground. The second victim then approached the offender and was also punched to the head.
The first man suffered lacerations, bruising and swelling to his face.
The second man, who is still in hospital, suffered lacerations to the back of his head and a broken right leg as a result of the fall. He hit his head on the ground in the restaurant.
His friend was kept in overnight and released on Wednesday.
“A number of patrons attempted to assist both victims on the ground and prevent the person continuing the assault,” he said.
“It is unexpected on this side of the harbour. It happens occasionally but not often.
“We don’t know what prompted it.”
The two young men are not believed to have spoken to their attacker beforehand.
They were socialising with friends and had just attended a party.
Police investigations are still continuing to identify the offender and CCTV is being reviewed. A number of witnesses and McDonald’s staff have come forward to help the police investigation.
Police have leads that they believe are “heading in the right direction”.
The man is described as having short, dark hair with a small styled mohawk. He was wearing a black and white top, grey shorts, white socks, black joggers and was carrying a small beige and brown checked man bag.
He is between 170cm and 180cm. He ran westbound on Military Rd and out of sight after the incident.
The Mosman Daily has contacted the Cremorne branch of McDonald’s for comment.
