Establishing a strong retail presence on the lower north shore was important to creative director Meares, who has very fond memories of growing up in the area.
“I spent the majority of my early childhood and part of my teenage years on the north shore,” she said.
“It was a great place to grow up in the 70s and the 80s.
“I remember on the really hot summer nights my mum would take us all down to Balmoral for a late evening swim because we were all too hot to sleep.
“Balmoral was such a beautiful beach to grow up at.”
Meares said the Mosman community’s love of the outdoors, health and fitness made the suburb the right fit for The Upside.
“As a lifestyle brand, Mosman was a logical next step,” she said.
“That beach lifestyle is a natural connection for healthy living and Mosman definitely has that.
“We love that our new neighbours are deliciously healthy cafes, great fashion boutiques and a multitude of yoga studios, gyms, personal trainers and historic sporting clubs.
“Mosman people also innately understand style; it’s a very fashion forward area, which is the perfect fit for our brand.”
Meares said she was excited to have a street presence for her label.
“I personally love shopfront shopping,” she said.
“Military Rd has just gotten stronger and stronger in retail.
“We love the brands that exist there and we wanted to be a part of that community.
“The store is also our biggest store yet and customers can gain a greater brand experience.”
The Mosman boutique joins The Upside’s stores in Westfield Bondi and Miranda.
The brand is known for its fashion-forward performance wear for women and men.
Meares previously founded swimwear brand Tigerlily, which she later sold to surfwear giant Billabong.
