THE man with the not-so golden gun prompted a dramatic response from police after a flurry of calls from the public.
Concerned citizens were alarmed when they spied a man dressed in a suit brandishing a handgun around a group of children in McMahons Point on August 26.
Police took no risks and rushed to the scene wearing their bullet proof vests.
On arrival the officers noticed a large group of teenagers dressed in character on a charity walk.
In the middle was a teacher acting as the greatest secret agent of all time: James Bond.
However, this 007 only had a licence to thrill as the weapon that frightened the living daylights out the neighbours was discovered to be a small black child’s toy.
The orange plug that is normally placed in the barrel of toy guns had been removed, police said.
“We do take all reports of any illegal use of firearms seriously and will respond appropriately,” said Sergeant Warren Davis from North Sydney police station.
Sgt Davis said it was a delicate situation as officers needed to deal with it appropriately without overdoing it. He explained that in order for a gun to be considered a toy it needs to have an orange tip.
The teacher was given an information caution and education in relation to the legislation.
“No doubt it won’t happen again,” Sgt Davis said.
The school did not wish to comment.
