A Sydney man allegedly linked to a Kurdish separatist group has been charged after police conducted two raids in the city’s north.
Renas Lelikan, 38, who’s alleged to be a member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), was arrested after Australian Federal Police (AFP) raided properties in North Sydney and Dee Why on Wednesday.
According to the ABC, the Kurdish journalist was last year allowed to return to Australia on a temporary travel document after being trapped in an Iraqi refugee camp for nine months.
He is due to face Parramatta Local Court via video link on Thursday after being charged with being a member of a terrorist organisation.
There is “no current or impending threat of a terrorist act to the Australian community arising from this investigation”, the AFP said in a statement.
The maximum penalty for the offence is 10 years’ imprisonment.
