PARTYGOERS are being warned they will be handed over to police if they bring drugs to a dance party in North Sydney.
Greenwood Hotel is welcoming US house and techno star Green Velvet for a concert next month.
The agency organising the event has warned people buying tickets that they have a “zero tolerance” for drugs.
“There will be a high police presence at the event,” the warning on Division Agency’s website reads.
“If you are caught with drugs you will be handed over to the police, and if you are caught under the influence of drugs you will be denied entry, and your ticket will be forfeited.”
The hotel’s advertised weekend parties have attracted police attention. Drug detecting dogs have been taken to the venue to assist in the search for illegal drugs.
Detective chief inspector Mike Birley from North Sydney police welcomed the message on the promoter’s website.
“The hotels are getting on board with zero tolerance to drug distribution and taking in their venues,” he said.
The police regularly meet with venues in the area and Insp Birley said that other venues are subject to the same attention.
The Mosman Daily is aware of at least 10 drug dog operations in the lower north shore so far this year.
One operation in the North Sydney area in February saw 34 people being charged with drug offences.
In April about 21 people were charged with drug offences in North Sydney.
“We don’t want to see anyone suffering an overdose,” Insp Birley said. “If we can prevent someone being harmed it’s worth it.”
Last year a sniffer dog was taken to the Halloween themed party at the Greenwood Hotel. Officers and the dog searched 25 people and made 13 arrests, the majority of which were for drug possession. A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital that night suffering the effects of a drug overdose.
Insp Birley said the most common drugs found in the area are ecstasy, amphetamines and ice.
The Greenwood Hotel declined to comment on the website warning. The Mosman Daily did not receive a response from Division Agency or Green Velvet.
Green Velvet plays the Days Like This! event at the Greenwood Hotel on October 29.
