Parents are being urged to warn their children about the dangers of bush parties.

Police were recently called to move on gangs of teenagers at unofficial parties in Mosman and Waverton.

“The parents may not even know that their child is attending these gatherings,” a North Sydney police spokeswoman said.

“However, if they have a good relationship with their child and know then it would be great if the parent could educate their child about what could happen ... especially if alcohol and drugs are being consumed.”

She said the risks include drug overdoses, sexual assaults, injuries, unprotected sex, fighting and drink spiking.

On August 19 a group of youths held a loud party on Chinamans Beach.

A 17-year-old boy was found with a small amount of cannabis and issued with a warning under the young offenders act.

And the following weekend about 200 teenagers turned up to Waverton to party. A boy was allegedly punched in the mouth at the gathering after pleading for the return of his stolen mobile phone.

North Sydney Council were notified of the large gathering at Carradah Park. Staff had to clean up litter from the park afterwards.

“We are aware that social media makes it easier for large crowds to congregate in one place on short notice, however, unauthorised gatherings are rare in the North Sydney Council area,” the spokeswoman said.

“If anyone is concerned about the behaviour of a large group in a public place they should contact the Police for advice and assistance.”

Gatherings of more than 60 people are required to have a permit on public land in the North Sydney area. In the Mosman area bookings are essential for gatherings of more than 50.
