Plans to redesign one of jewels in the crown of the northern beaches has been revealed.

Northern Beaches Council has unveiled its Clontarf Beach masterplan.

The plans include the moving of the car park.

The plans include the moving of the carpark to create more recreation space, the increasing of the tidal pool to 50m and a new playground.

The council also proposes leaving space for a commuter ferry wharf — which could be installed further down the line.

The plans will be discussed at Tuesday night’s council meeting before being put out for public consultation.

Mayor Michael Regan said now is the time to act to preserve and improve Clontarf for future generations.

The plans include realigning the car park to the eastern side of the beach to create more continuous recreational space.

Council state this will also increase safety by moving cars away from the playground.

Further north a timber boardwalk and viewing platform will be built.

The playground will also be upgraded to create an “inclusive, fun and challenging” space with an “aquatic and boating” theme.

New toilets will also be installed.

The tidal rock pool, first built in 1949, will get some attention with plans to increase it to 50m.

Sandstone terraces next to the pool will provide seating and also act as a seawall protecting the beach and park.

Further to the north a cantilevered timber boardwalk and viewing area will be built and there will be works carried out on the Spit Bridge to Manly walkway, including high tide access.

Council said its masterplan also leaves space for a future commuter ferry wharf.

“Clontarf has long been a popular venue where families meet to enjoy time together,’’ Mr Regan said.

“Not only is the area family friendly, it is also boasts breathtaking harbour views and a wonderful history for so many people.

“Some of the infrastructure can be improved and the space isn’t working as well as it could.

That’s why we have looked at moving the carpark to allow for more open space near the beach and also provide more amenities closer to the playground area.

“I encourage the community to get online and have a look at what is proposed — we’d love to have as much input as possible on the draft plan.”

Stage one of the works, which includes the playground upgrade, providing better accessibility to toilets and the construction of terraces, is included in council’s draft delivery program for

2019-2020 at a cost of $1.2 million.

The masterplan is expected to be put out to public consultation at tomorrow’s meeting.
