A woman suffered a neck injury and a 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle collision that caused traffic chaos on one of the northern beaches’ busiest road routes.
The girl was a passenger in a Renault Clio hatchback that was struck from behind by another vehicle on Warringah Rd at Frenchs Forest at about 12.20pm on Monday.
A third car, an Audi hatchback, being driven by the woman, aged in her 60s, was also damaged in the collision, just west of the intersection with Allambie Rd.
Police were seen questioning the elderly male driver of a Toyota station wagon that had sustained massive damage to its front end.
The rear of the Renault hatchback, being driven by the injured girl’s father, was crushed.
NSW Ambulance said that a female was trapped in the vehicle for a period of time.
Fire and Rescue NSW officers, with the assistance of Ambulance paramedics, freed the girl from the hatchback before she was assessed in an ambulance.
An ambulance spokeswoman said the woman in the Audi had suffered neck injuries and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.
The girl was taken to the same hosopital in a stable condition.
Traffic in both directions on the eight-lane section of Warringah Rd was reduced to just one lane each way while the woman was freed from her car.
In a statement police advised that the Toyota was travelling west on Warringah Rd in lane 2 when the driver allegedly reacted late to traffic taking off at a green light causing it to collide with the back of the Renault and a grey Audi.
“This collision pushed the red Renault through lane 3, over the concrete divider onto the oncoming traffic,” police stated.
“The grey Audi was also spun around in lane 1 from the collision.
“The grey Toyota van pulled over into lane 1 straight away.”
Northern Beaches Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
