Plans for a multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art sporting complex on the northern beaches have been revealed.

Prestigious Mosman school Queenwood has bought six hectares of land in Ingleside for $16.5 million with the intention of building the facility.

Many millions of dollars more will be spent creating the part indoor, part outdoor facility which will also be available to the public.

The school purchased the land, at 169 and 169a Mona Vale Rd, from developer Sunland Group Limited.

The developer had hoped to build new homes but was stopped in its tracks after it was deemed there would be an unacceptable bushfire risk to residents.

School principal Elizabeth Stone said they intended to build a high-class facility for the school and community.

“We are very interested in sharing the playing fields and courts with the local community,” she said.

“The school expects to use the facilities on weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings, so outside those times there will be ample opportunities for sporting clubs to benefit from the site and we look forward to speaking with interested parties.”

Ms Stone said the school was still finalising details on what facilities would be included.

However, they are expected to include indoor and outdoor sports courts including tennis, netball and basketball as well as football and soccer fields.

The school also competes in sports ranging from swimming and hockey to equestrian and athletics.

“We are going to start a consultation process to discover what is needed,” she said.

“It is in everyone’s interests for the facilities to be high quality so we want to get it right.”

Consultation is set to start in the coming weeks with the school hoping to have the facility up and running from 2024.

The girls school is one of the most prestigious on the north shore.

Notable alumni including writer Shirley Hazzard, actor Phoebe Tonkin and new Warringah MP Zali Steggall.
