Work has begun on a new 80 bed aged care facility in Oran Park.
Anglicare CEO Grant Millard turned the first sod on construction of the $31 million Grice St project earlier today.
The facility, which includes a 16 bed dementia wing, will be part of the Anglicare Oran Park Village which is also set to expand with 67 new retirement villas planned in the coming years.
Mr Millard said the company’s research had recognised there was a need in the local community and the Camden LGA was did not currently have the capacity to meet demand.
“Our research found that Oran Park has experienced a 16 per cent population growth between the last two censuses. Growth was predominantly driven by people aged 65 and older,” he said.
“The Camden Local Government Area is also expected to experience significant growth in the over 65 and 70 population in the next 20 years or so.
“It is estimated that there will be an additional 17,900 people 70 years and older in two decades which means there will strong demand for residential aged care accommodation in the area.”
Mr Millard said dementia care would be an important aspect of the new facility.
“Over 60 per cent of people who go into residential aged care have a diagnosis of dementia and there can be many challenging issues dealing with people with dementia and we’re seeing some of those highlighted in the royal commission,” he said.
“You need specialist skills and it’s also a costly exercise to give people a quality of life.
“You don’t want to just be housing problematic people away, you want to make sure you’re giving them the deep respect and quality of life.”

The new Anglicare aged care facility will also employ about 80 people.
“We will be looking to employ a host of people including nurses, occupational therapists and other care related staff once the build is complete,” Mr Millard said.
Mr Millard said the company would continue to look at opportunities to establish aged care facilities in the area.
Anglicare currently has a development application lodged with Campbelltown Council to build 315 independent living units, 32 attached villas, a 100-bed residential aged care facility, community facilities and carparking on Pembroke Rd, Minto.
