Shock CCTV footage has revealed a string of alleged break-ins of homes and cars in Sydney’s southwest this week.

Residents in Tahmoor have told the Saturday Telegraph they have experienced a disturbing uptick in crime, with group of youths roaming the streets in the dead of night, allegedly surveilling houses and cars and searching for ways to break in.

Multiple streets were allegedly targeted by the teens on Tuesday, but residents say local police, located more than 30 minutes away in Narellan, aren’t helping address the issue.

One resident who shared footage of their car being broken into, said that police told them to report the incident to the police assistance line rather than call triple-0.

They argued their fears for the safety of their young family at home were being dismissed.

It’s led to renewed demands from Tahmoor residents for a stronger police presence, with recent events leaving locals feeling unprotected and ignored.

Suzy Brandater, Wollondilly councillor, joined the campaign for a manned police station in Picton, mobilised by a Facebook group with almost 2000 members that has been advocating for a greater police presence for years.

She said Picton police station currently only has one police car and isn’t open 24 hours.

“I am deeply troubled by recent events in Tahmoor. The break-ins in Tahmoor in the early hours of Tuesday morning were frightening violations of our safety and security. I really feel for the people targeted as this would have been terrifying for them,” she said.

“The fact that a group of thieves could brazenly target our community, going from house to house, breaking into cars, and attempting to invade our homes clearly demonstrates that we need more police in our area.

“... Our population is rapidly expanding, and the need for stronger infrastructure to ensure our safety comes with that growth. The Picton police station must be fully staffed and equipped to address the challenges we face.

“We cannot afford to have gaps in our law enforcement that embolden criminals and leave our citizens vulnerable. Picton police station must be fully staffed, not just once a week when court is in session.”

Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said the council was “strongly supportive” of an increased police presence across the area.

“Our community desperately needs and deserves a 24-hour police station,” he said. “While our police do a fantastic job with the limited resources they have, we believe that we need a lot more of them to look after our steadily growing community.”

“Each Police Area Command and Police District provides a 24/7 policing response to all suburbs within the command or district,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

“The command is resourced to most effectively deploy police across the command, with no impact on the provision of service to the community.

“The safety and wellbeing of the community remains our priority.”
