A former NRL star who achieved cult hero status in the nation’s capital has been charged after allegedly slashing the tyres of a woman’s car in Sydney’s south-west.
Former Canberra Raider and Wests Tiger Joey Leilua did not appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday, where a solicitor acting on his behalf pleaded not guilty to domestic violence-related intimidation and destroying property.
A NSW Police spokesperson said Leilua, 33, was involved in a “domestic incident” at Fifth Ave, Macquarie Fields, about 6pm on Sunday, January 19.
Police will allege in court a woman known to him returned home and was threatened by Leilua outside.
Leilua left the property, but as he left he allegedly stabbed the tyres of the woman’s car before driving away.
Police will allege Leilua, whose full name is Joseph Ikenasio Poiva Leilua Kelemete, returned a short time later and stabbed the tyres further before again leaving the scene.
The police spokesperson said an investigation led to Leilua being charged at Surry Hills Police Station two days later.
Leilua retired from professional rugby league in 2023 after 225 games in the NRL with the Raiders, Roosters, Knights and Tigers.
The 15-time Samoan international played two seasons in the UK with Featherstone Rovers. He is signed on to play for the Wyong Roos in the upcoming Newcastle Rugby League season.
Leilua has also turned his hand to boxing in recent years with bouts against the likes of ex-NRL players Curtis Scott and Chris Heighington.
The case will return to court in April.
