A $30m state-of-the-art sports and health science facility for the Wests Tigers home ground is a step closer to reality in Sydney’s southwest. Here’s the latest.

A $30m state-of-the-art sports and health science facility is a step closer to reality in Sydney’s southwest, with plans now before the region’s planning panel.

The Campbelltown Sports Centre of Excellence is set to transform the home ground of Wests Tigers and Macarthur FC at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, with the addition of a modern building up to four storeys high.

The plans provide a much-needed facelift to the sporting ground which dates back to the 1950s, with works including demolishing spectator seating and landscaping at the northern end of the stadium, and relocating the electronic scoreboard.

The building will include a science education centre, health and medical hub, gym, aquatic recovery facilities and new change rooms.

Planners behind the project state the proposal intends to address the “unmet need in South West Sydney for elite sporting facilities” and will include “specialist equipment which can be used for rehabilitative purposes”.

“The Campbelltown Sport and Health Centre of Excellence will co-locate facilities for elite sports training … as well as sports and recreational areas for the community, and special-use programs for the elderly and disabled,” a planner said.

The facility will also provide a new restaurant and cafe for stadium-goers, outdoor seating, indoor multipurpose areas for events, and office spaces for coaches, players and media.

Funding for the project was provided by all three levels of government, alongside support from Western Sydney University (WSU).

The NSW Government committed $16.7m through WestInvest when the project was first announced in 2023, with the remaining $12.7m sourced from Campbelltown Council, a federal government community grant, and WSU.

A Campbelltown City Council spokesman stated that the project aimed to enhance “dedicated female programs and facilities to improve pathways for women and girls”, and the overall community’s health through increased participation in sporting activities.

WSU will be a core partner in the project and is proposed to provide key services focused on “high performance health and sports science”.

In partnership with the Centre of Excellence, WSU and other partners in relevant industries will also provide key pathways for developing local sporting talent across Sydney’s southwest.
