Scott Kennedy
A father was so enraged about not being sold a car, he shattered a man’s leg, shocking CCTV footage revealed.
Scott Nathan Kennedy, 35, was jailed for his “appalling” conduct after he left the victim requiring four surgeries and with a permanent limp.
During sentencing, the District Court heard the victim’s wife was selling her silver Mitsubishi ASX in August 2022.
Kennedy attended the victim’s Munno Para address to test drive the car and his wife contacted the victim’s wife in October to pay a deposit.
Kennedy went to the victim’s home on October 9, 2022 to discuss the sale of the car.
After the victim told Kennedy that the car was to be sold to a family member, he became aggressive, telling them he had already bought them a thankyou present.
The court heard Kennedy armed himself with the handle of the car’s jack and demanded the victim sell him the car.
“You followed him up the driveway and swung the metal pole towards his legs,” Judge Anthony Allen said.
The court heard Kennedy then struck the victim again to his legs, with the third time causing the victim to fall to the ground.
“It is apparent from that footage that on the third swing the victim’s leg was instantly shattered,” Judge Allen said.
Judge Allen sentenced Kennedy to three years and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of one year and 10 months.
Christopher Corley
CCTV footage revealed a man’s sickening assault on a teenage boy and his mother outside a popular McDonald’s.
Christopher John Corley, 29, was jailed for over five years for his brazen daylight robbery while on a methamphetamine bender.
During sentencing, the District Court heard Corley approached the first victim, a 16-year-old boy, inside the Paralowie McDonald’s on July 5, 2022 and shook his hand.
As the victim walked to the car park, Corley followed him outside.
Footage the court released shows the boy returning to the car with food and drinks before Corley runs up behind him and punches him in the face.
The boy collapses to the ground, dropping the bag of food and the tray of drinks.
Corley begins collecting the various food items which had fallen onto the ground.
Shortly after, the footage shows Corley being approached by the victim’s mother.
After she refuses to give Corley her car keys a scuffle ensues, with Corley pulling her onto the ground.
The boy manages to pull Corley off his mother, and he leaves, but returns shortly after and grabs her keys and some spilt food from the ground.
Judge Slattery sentenced Corley to five years and four months jail, with a non-parole period of four months.
The sentence was backdated to July 6, 2022.
Philip Brownlow
Courageous patrons launched an attack on the getaway car after four men threatened bottle shop employees with weapons, CCTV footage revealed.
Philip Anthony Brownlow, 27, said he agreed to participate in the violent robberies as he didn’t want to be viewed as a snitch.
The District Court heard Brownlow and three other men drove into the Halfway Hotel’s bottle shop at Beverley on March 16, 2020.
One of the men approached the first victim, a bottle shop attendant and swung a crowbar at him before walking into the bar inside the hotel.
While in the bar the man then confronted another employee, snatched her handbag and attempted to grab at the till.
“While trying to intervene she was thrown to the floor, hitting her head where she received a cut to her forehead and bruising to her upper body,” Judge Anthony Allen said during sentencing.
The other two men then entered the bottle shop, with Brownlow following while carrying a silver hatchet.
The men returned to the car with multiple bottles of alcohol.
“Patrons of the hotel bravely launched a counter offensive and attacked the Captiva by kicking it and hitting it with pool cues before the vehicle fled the scene,” Judge Allen said.
The men then went to Challa Gardens Hotel drive-through bottle shop at West Croydon.
One of Brownlow’s co-offenders got out of the car and swung a meat cleaver at an employee, causing a cut, while another man grabbed the till.
The Munno Para father-of-two pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery.
Judge Allen sentenced Brownlow to six years and three months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and ten months. He was also disqualified from driving for one year.
The sentence was backdated to September 7, 2020.
Raymond Beatty
A man who brutally stabbed an innocent member of the public before leaving him for dead was jailed for almost a decade.
Raymond James Beatty, 33, was sentenced in the District Court for a number of charges including aggravated causing serious harm, theft and assault using a weapon.
The night before the harrowing attack Beatty had consumed alcohol and methamphetamine, which he was a regular user of.
In the early hours of August 29, 2022, Beatty made the decision to go to see his mother at her home in O’Sullivan Beach, walking over an hour and a half from Hackham West.
Beatty then made his way to a nearby supermarket and a short time later David Osborne drove into the carpark.
“When you saw Mr Osborne walk into the shop, you informed the intention to steal his car,” Judge Michelle Sutcliffe said.
Beatty went to the back of the store and took a knife off the shelf and ran at the victim with the knife, shoving him into a shelf with force.
As the victim ran, Beatty chased him down the aisle, colliding with him falling to the ground.
The two men along with the shop assistant tussled before Beatty chased Mr Osborne out to the carpark and stabbed him in the back.
Mr Osborne was stabbed a total of six times, before Beatty took his keys and drove off in his car.
Mr Osborne was taken to hospital where he spent over a week in an induced coma to ensure his collapsed lung remained inflated.
From there, chaos continued for Beatty, crashing into other innocent members of the public, before holding up at least three different businesses and three workers in the search for another car.
He was also spotted driving up to 150km/h in an 80km/h zone.
It wasn’t until police deployed several sets of road spikes that a police car drove into Beatty’s second stolen car and the pursuit ended.
Beatty was sentenced to nine years and 11 months jail, with a non-parole period of seven years and nine months.
He was also disqualified from driving for 10 years.
Blair Ormsby
A man in a drug-fuelled daze robbed a service station employee with a box cutter before buying snacks off the same worker, CCTV footage revealed.
Blair Noel Ormsby, 47, committed the bizarre robbery after he lost his wallet on a night out and his hunger got the better of him.
The District Court on Monday heard Ormsby attended the Pooraka On The Run service station shortly before 7am on May 8, 2020.
Ormsby approached the attendant with a box cutter in his hand and said words to the effect of “I’ve got no money, I’m going to need some”.
“You then said to him ‘don’t worry, I’ll pay you back’,” Judge Geraldine Davison said during sentencing.
In the CCTV footage released by the court, Ormsby can be seen in a white singlet behaving bizarrely before taking $50 from the attendant.
Moments later, he returns with snacks, including orange juice, chocolate, cheese and hand sanitiser, which he uses the $50 to pay for and accepts the change.
He was arrested by police shortly after and told police he only intended to borrow the money so he could get some food.
Ormsby also said he used the box cutter for work and had no idea why he was holding it during the robbery.
Judge Davison sentenced Ormsby to two years and two months jail, with a non-parole period of one year and two months.
Considering his rehabilitation efforts, the sentence was suspended on a two-year good behaviour bond, with supervision.
Selwyn Warren
A grandmother was punched in the face and dragged by a car after she confronted the brazen thief who stole her handbag, a court heard.
Selwyn Benjamin Warren, 20, had been awake for nine days on meth when he committed the “terrifying” assault.
The District Court heard the “elderly and vulnerable” victim was playing with her three-year-old granddaughter at a playground in Paradise on May 11, 2021.
Warren walked past the pram and grabbed the victim’s handbag, as well as her granddaughter’s backpack.
The victim ran after him, with Warren getting into a stolen Yaris.
“(The victim) reached into the driver’s side window, at which time you punched her in the face,” Judge Joana Fuller said during sentencing.
Warren started to drive off with the woman still holding on to the window.
“(The victim) was dragged by the car briefly before she fell to the ground,” Judge Fuller said.
“As you drove off, you drove over her hand causing her great pain.”
Judge Fuller sentenced Warren to three years, one month in jail, with a non-parole period of 19 months. The sentence was backdated to May 11, 2021.
He was also disqualified from driving for six years.
Yummy Box robbery
A violent robbery’s getaway driver received a longer prison term than his co-offenders – who kicked their victims and struck them with a hammer – despite never leaving his vehicle.
The District Court jailed Hendrix James Martin for four years, four months and two days for his part in the robbing of Park Holme’s Yummy Box takeaway restaurant.
Brenton Paul Crombie, who twice struck one of the victims in the head with a hammer, was sentenced to four years, two months and 28 days’ jail.
Thomas William Schultz, who kicked a victim while she lay on the ground, was jailed for three years and 10 months.
In sentencing, Judge Michael Burnett said each man played a different role in the offending but “you are all responsible” for the incident, which was caught on CCTV.
Martin, 32, Crombie, 23, and Schultz, 22, all pleaded guilty to multiple theft and violence
Judge Burnett said CCTV footage showed Crombie and Schultz get out of a Toyota Landcruiser driven by Martin, who remains in the driver’s seat.
Upon entering the store, a female victim is knocked to the ground – Schultz kicks her after she falls.
When the store’s owner attempts to intervene, armed with a stick, Crombie strikes him twice with the hammer, damaging his face and breaking his teeth.
Judge Burnett said the group went on to steal a wallet and car keys from another driver in the carpark before leaving.
He ordered Martin serve a 24-month non-parole period, be disqualified from driving for 3½ years and pay a $2400 fine.
Crombie was given a two-year, four-month non-parole period, while Schultz will serve a minimum one-year, nine-month and 10-day term.
Rebecca Hutchins and Robert Abdulla
A mother who punched a service station attendant in the face during a “terribly frightening” robbery alongside her footballer lover had her first taste of jail.
Rebecca Rose Hutchins, 35, and Robert John Abdulla’s lives were spiralling out of control when they committed the violent drug-fuelled robbery.
The District Court heard Hutchins and Abdulla, 32, entered the Belair On The Run service station in the early hours of August 7.
Abdulla, who brandished a tyre iron at the victim, demanded she open the till.
The court heard Hutchins then jumped over the counter and started filling a rubbish bin with cigarettes.
When the victim tried to retrieve her stolen phone to keep photos of her children, she was punched in the face by Hutchins.
Abdulla and Hutchins fled with cash and cigarettes, valued at $5684.
Hutchins, of South Hummocks and Abdulla, of Holden Hill, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery.
Judge Heffernan sentenced Hutchins to four years and one month jail, with a non-parole period of one year and 10 months.
Abdulla was sentenced to five years and 10 months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and two months.
His sentence was backdated to August 13, 2021.
