The man who brutally stabbed an innocent member of the public before leaving him for dead has been jailed for almost a decade.
Raymond James Beatty, 33, was sentenced in the Adelaide District Court on Friday for a number of charges including aggravated causing serious harm, theft and assault using a weapon.
Court vision released of the terrifying rampage at an O’Sullivan Beach supermarket shows the moment the innocent shopper was stabbed in the carpark after being chased and attacked inside.
The night before the harrowing attack, Beatty had consumed alcohol and methamphetamine, which he was a regular user of.
In the early hours of August 29, 2022, Beatty made the decision to go to see his mother at her home in O’Sullivan Beach, walking over an hour and a half from Hackham West.
As a part of a separate bail agreement, Beatty had been prohibited from attending the address and on his arrival, his sibling instructed he had called the police, asking Beatty to leave.
“You yelled out to your mum, wanting to tell her you loved her before you left,” Judge Michelle Sutcliffe said in her sentencing remarks.
“You appeared to be intoxicated and appeared to be holding a bottle of alcohol, you waved the bottle around saying you would hurt someone or yourself.”
Beatty then made his way to a nearby supermarket, purchasing some items before returning to his mother’s street, leaving two bags on the porch.
It was then Beatty met who could have been his first victim of the day, a woman parked in her car outside the O’Sullivan Beach grocer.
“You said to her in a calm voice, ‘I was going to steal your car’,” Judge Sutcliffe said.
“You shook her hand and ominously told her to lock her doors when you left.”
A short time later David Osborne drove into the carpark, not knowing his life was about to be changed, forever.
“When you saw Mr Osborne walk into the shop, you informed the intention to steal his car,” Judge Sutcliffe said.
Beatty went to the back of the store and took a knife off the shelf, discarding the packaging, and headed for Mr Osborne.
The 33-year-old ran at his victim with the knife, shoving him into a shelf with force.
As the victim ran, Beatty chased him down the aisle, colliding with him falling to the ground.
The two men along with the shop assistant tussled before Beatty chased Mr Osborne out to the carpark stabbing him in the back, pushing him over, stabbing him again.
Mr Osborne was stabbed a total of six times, before Beatty took his keys and drove off in his car.
“Your conduct was nothing short of horrific,” Judge Sutcliffe said.
“Over the space of 90 seconds, you changed Mr Osborne’s life.
“You realised you had crossed the line and done something very serious.”
Mr Osborne was taken to hospital where he spent over a week in an induced coma to ensure his collapsed lung remained inflated.
From there, chaos continued for Beatty, crashing into other innocent members of the public, before holding up at least three different businesses and three workers in the search for another car.
He was also spotted driving up to 150km an hour in an 80km an hour zone.
It wasn’t until police deployed several sets of road spikes that a police car drove into Beatty’s second stolen car and the pursuit ended.
Judge Sutcliffe said she found Beatty to be remorseful for his actions despite the calculation of the offences.
“You have said that you do not expect forgiveness and have provided context about the things you were struggling with at the time of the offending,” she said.
Beatty was sentenced to a total of nine years and 11 months imprisonment with a non parole period of seven years, none months and seven days.
Beatty was also disqualified from driving for 10 years.
