Raymond Beatty pleads guilty to stabbing a man for his car in Adelaide’s south

A man who was running an errand was left “saturated in his own blood” after being stabbed outside a seaside supermarket, a court has heard.

The man responsible for a “bizarre yet terrifying” early morning carjacking which left his victim “saturated in his own blood” had no intention to commit murder, a court has been told.

Raymond James Beatty, 33, faced the Adelaide District Court on Friday after pleading guilty to stabbing a man before fleeing in a stolen car at O’Sullivan Beach last year.

The court heard that on the morning of August 29, 2022, Beatty had been told to vacate the home he had been living in at Hackham West, before proceeding to walk an hour and a half to his mother’s house at O’Sullivan Beach.

Wayne Carlin, representing Beatty, made submissions to the court his client proceeded to “flip out” when he found out family members had called the police due to Beatty being forbidden from attending the address.

“His intention was to talk to his mum … he knew he wasn’t meant to attend the address,” Mr Carlin said.

“He became angry, he left the home knowing police were on their way and walked to the shops on Gulfview Road.”

It was here David Osborne was completing a quick errand before taking off on holiday.

The court heard Beatty had sighted Mr Osborne leaving his vehicle and heading into the supermarket.

“He (Beatty) formed the intention he was going to steal his motor vehicle in an attempt to get away from the police,” Mr Carlin told the court.

The court heard Mr Beatty proceeded to follow Mr Osborne into the store, demanding he hand over his car keys, before Beatty picked up a steak knife from the shelf and chased Mr Osborne out of the store before stabbing him.

“Mr Beatty has made it quite clear he never had intentions to kill Mr Osborne,” Mr Carlin said.

“When he had possession of the vehicle he realised he had crossed a line and it was very serious.”

In a victim impact statement to the court, Mr Osborne highlighted the trauma that had been inflicted upon him that morning, saying he can no longer enjoy the simple tasks like attending shops or even being outside as well as suffering nightmares.

“I was cowardly and callously attacked without warning,” he said.

“I still have flashbacks sitting outside the delicatessen, saturated in my own blood, unable to move and appear that I was about to die.

“I am constantly paranoid that I may be attacked without warning that I may be attacked at anytime.”

Mr Osborne asked Judge Michelle Sutcliffe to sentence Beatty not only on his behalf but on behalf of all the lives changed on that morning.

“Please take into account the police, firefighters, first responders, general community and especially the victims of such repulsive anti-social cowardly and cruel crime and ensure the courts are listening when we say enough is enough.”

Beatty then proceeded to crash the stolen car into a woman, his second victim, on O’Sullivan Beach Rd at Lonsdale about five minutes later – with the aftermath captured on CCTV.

The court heard the second victim was “lucky to be alive”.

The prosecutor told the court Beatty had alcohol, THC and methamphetamines in his system at the time of the offending.

“This offending was bizarre but also terrifying,” the prosecutor said.

“He has engaged in a rampage against multiple people unknown to him.”

Beatty was remanded in custody and will return for sentencing in September.
