A Hackham West man charged with attempted murder following an alleged carjacking and crime spree in the southern suburbs yesterday has faced court.
Raymond Beatty, 32, appeared via video link from the Christies Beach Magistrate Court on Tuesday, after allegedly stabbing a man and stealing his car — sparking a car crash and dramatic chase through O’Sullivan Beach and Lonsdale on Monday.
Wayne Carlin, defence counsel for Mr Beatty, made no application for bail, remanding his client in custody until his next appearance.
Mr Beatty is facing a number of charges including committing theft using force, committing assault, dangerous driving to escape police pursuit as well as the attempted murder charge.
The alarm was raised about 7.30am on Monday, after the alleged victim was stabbed outside Friendly Grocer on Galloway Rd at O’Sullivan Beach.
Police allege Mr Beatty then stole the victim’s silver Ford Mondeo sedan and drove off.
The stolen car was then allegedly involved in a nearby crash on O’Sullivan Beach Rd at Lonsdale about five minutes later – with the aftermath captured on CCTV.
Mr Beatty then allegedly smashed into a blue Mazda before fleeing on foot. No-one was injured.
According to shop owner Bruce Song who saw the incident, two men entered the shop separately just before 7:40am.
Mr Song said he heard the pair having an argument at the back of the store.
“An older man and a younger man were fighting so I went to find them and got in between,” Mr Song said.
“I told them to stop and I saw that the younger man had a knife in his hand.
The older man then left the store and was followed by the younger man, Mr Song said.
He has told police he followed the pair outside and saw the alleged attack – a 32-year-old allegedly stabbing the older victim.
“When I got outside I saw the older man fall down on the ground,” he said.
Mr Song said there was “a lot of blood”.
“He had a cut to his face and I could see blood on his back,” he said.
“I just told him to stay calm and he told me he couldn’t breathe.”
Mr Beatty will return to court later this year.
