A man has been rushed to hospital after he was stabbed in an alleged violent daylight carjacking which sparked a car crash and dramatic chase in Adelaide’s south.
The alarm was raised about 7.30am Monday, after a man was stabbed outside Friendly Grocer on Galloway Rd at O'Sullivan Beach.
Police allege the attacker then stole the victim’s silver Ford Mondeo sedan and drove off.
The victim was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre where he remains in a serious condition.
According to shop owner Bruce Song who saw the incident, two men entered the shop separately just before 7:40am.
Mr Song said he heard the pair having an argument at the back of the store.
“An older man and a younger man were fighting so I went to find them and got in between,” Mr Song said.
“I told them to stop and I saw that the younger man had a knife in his hand.
The older man then left the store and was followed by the younger man, Mr Song said.
He has told police he followed the pair outside and saw the alleged attack – a 32-year-old who has since been arrested – allegedly stabbing the older victim.
“When I got outside I saw the older man fall down on the ground,” he said.
Mr Song said there was “a lot of blood”.
“He had a cut to his face and I could see blood on his back,” he said.
“I just told him to stay calm and he told me he couldn’t breathe.”
The suspect fled in the vehicle while Mr Song quickly called police and paramedics who arrived minutes later.
The stolen car was then allegedly involved in a nearby crash on O’Sullivan Beach Rd at Lonsdale about five minutes later – with the aftermath captured on CCTV.
The silver Ford crashed into a blue Mazda. No-one was injured.
Alana Alexander had just arrived at work at Tartan Tuckerbox when she heard screeching and a loud bang.
“My first aid instincts kicked in and I ran over to see if they were injured,” she said.
“The 76-year-old woman was just in shock and had some whiplash. She was on her way to golf.”
A man left his vehicle and ran over to apologise to the woman before fleeing on foot up the road.
He then entered several businesses on Devon St saying he wanted another vehicle.
One witness – who did not wish to be named – said he saw a man come in with a knife and threaten them.
“He eventually ran down the road to try other places,” they said.
The alleged suspect eventually took a vehicle from a customer at a business on Devon St.
A staff member, who did not wish to be named, said he threatened the man with the knife.
“He ran inside and ran down the back and the man came in,” he said
“He said ‘give us the car keys or I’m gonna kill you’,” he said.
The witness said the man then realised the car was still running outside.
“The hatch of the door was still open when he drove out,” he said.
“The cops were already coming down the road, they were already in the area, so they gave chase.”
The suspect sped off in the vehicle and was pursued by patrols on to Dyson Rd, then to Flaxmill Rd, police said.
Road spikes were deployed near the intersection of Flaxmill Rd and Main South Rd.
The chaotic crime spree came to an end when a police vehicle rammed the second stolen vehicle on Main South Road. A police vehicle was towed from the scene.
