A 29-year-old man has confessed to helping a stranger attack his girlfriend’s ex in a Green Valley carpark, leaving the victim sporting multiple stab wounds and a smashed car.

Kane Watson pleaded guilty in Campbelltown Local Court this week to charges of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and damaging property in company over his role in the violent melee.

Court documents state Watson was visiting Green Valley Hotel when he witnessed an argument break out between Jordan Morgan and Matthew Flaherty in the carpark on the evening of September 5, 2023.

The situation soon escalated between the love rivals when Morgan reached through the open drive-side window of Mr Flaherty’s car and stabbed him in the leg with a knife.

Agreed facts tendered to the court in Morgan’s sentencing said he then tried to open the car door and, after prying it open slightly, lunged at Mr Flaherty “several times” and stabbed him again, this time in the sternum.

Watson, who the court heard did not know either party, jumped into the skirmish wielding a police-style baton, which he used to smash the glass of the driver’s side window.

Mr Flaherty confronted the pair with a tyre iron and used it to hit Morgan’s car in an attempt to ward them off. Morgan’s girlfriend then came out of the establishment yelling “police are on the way”, prompting Watson to jump into Morgan’s car and the duo then fled the scene together.

Police arrested Morgan five days after the incident but Watson was not charged for another five months.

Magistrate Shane McAnulty told the court jail time was an appropriate sentence for Watson’s violent behaviour and there was a need to “send a message” to anyone who chose to arm themselves with the intent to intimidate.

“He should’ve put his hands in his pockets and walked away from the situation … violence begets violence, it’s as simple as that,” Mr McAnulty said.

Watson was sentenced to 13 months behind bars but with time served, his term of imprisonment ended on April 4, meaning he was immediately released from custody.

Morgan was also sentenced in Campbelltown District Court in December last year, after pleading guilty to reckless wounding and damaging property in company.

He was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of two years and 10 months with a non-parole period of 18 months. He was due for release on parole last month.
