A new cultural and creative heart for the Wollondilly area is one step closer, with bold plans to rejuvenate Picton revealed.
Wollondilly Shire Council is seeking feedback on a draft concept plan for a Cultural and Civic Precinct, to be funded by the Western Sydney City Deal.
The proposed precinct would include a new two-storey library, construction of two buildings to be used as community and performance space, cafe and more, as well as the refurbishment of the Wollondilly Shire Hall.
A new Council administration building, designed to accommodate about 300 staff, has been proposed but would be separately funded by Wollondilly Council.
The precinct would be located on Menangle and Colden streets, using council-owned land.
Through initial community consultation, residents indicated their support for the precinct and called for an outdoor courtyard or village green, as well as a multipurpose centre.
Wollondilly Council acting CEO Michael Malone said the precinct would be an asset for the entire Shire.
“We are aiming for a centre that supports and promotes the strengths of the community, with opportunities for arts and culture, innovation and technology, learning and business,
health and wellbeing,” he said.
“It has been great to hear the initial thoughts of our community members and we hope we have been able to capture their ideas in the Draft Concept Plan.”
