RESIDENTS are being urged to help shape a management plan to protect the Bingara Reserve grey-headed flying fox camp at Macquarie Fields.

Campbelltown Council is developing the plan of management and people are invited to participate in a short online survey until Tuesday, August 8.

The survey gives people the chance to learn about, rank and make informed decisions about the management options available for the Macquarie Fields site which is recognised as a nationally important flying fox camp by the Federal Government.

Help Save the Wildlife and Bushlands in Campbelltown Facebook page founder and administrator Ricardo Lonza urged residents across the Macarthur area to complete the survey because he said flying foxes played a vital part in the environment.

“We should look after flying foxes because they are important pollinators and they disperse seeds and forage on the nectar,’’ he said.

“They are also important for the future of habitats and rainforests and we need to protect them.’’

Grey-headed flying foxes are important seed dispersers for native trees, including hardwood and rainforest species.

Their camps also act as stopover sites for migrating flying foxes.
