BECOMING the designated driver is one way Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre director Associate Professor Stephen Della-Fiorentina resists the temptation to have a tipple and stay alcohol free during Dry July.
The centre, in the Campbelltown Hospital grounds, has been chosen again as a recipient of the fundraiser and, as its director, Assoc Prof Della-Fiorentina is happily leading by example.
“I’ve done it (Dry July) before and I’m motivated. I won’t fall off the wagon,” Assoc Prof Della-Fiorentina said with a laugh.
“As the centre director it’s my job to stick to it and to be strong. It’s easy to do because it’s for one month of the year.”
Assoc Prof Della-Fiorentina said having a month off alcohol had health benefits including feeling and sleeping better and losing weight.
“I feel better, not that I normally go crazy anyway,” he said.
The centre hopes to raise $40,000 through Dry July so residents are urged to dig deep to help reach the target.
Funds raised will be spent on the centre’s wellness programs for cancer patients, including massage and pet therapies, yoga and pilates.
The Dry July Foundation estimates an average of 11,181 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer this month.
