Have you noticed an eye-catching mural brightening Campbelltown’s HJ Daley Library?
The striking artwork was inspired as part of a Campbelltown Arts Centre’s exhibition OK Democracy, We Need to Talk.
A number of the region’s youth rolled up their sleeves, picked up paint rollers and brushes and emblazoned their inspired thoughts across the library’s wall to spark a conversation.
The unique freedom of expression was explored as a Campbelltown Arts Centre and Western Sydney Literature Institution workshop, exploring the meaning of democracy and its role in day-to-day life.
Campbelltown Arts Centre creative learning officer Timothy George said the event was a rewarding experience for all participants, aged from 15 to 17.
“We approached the workshop from the perspective of artists who use their free speech and freedom of expression to show their views on a physical place,” he said.
After discussions, the teenagers had the opportunity to illuminate their own perception of democracy to the people of Campbelltown.
Phrases and words such as speech, protest, change and equality were emblazoned across the striking mural.
“We chose to use a highlighter yellow background to show it was something important,” Mr George said.
The mural will remain for a number of weeks.
