FOR more than 20 years the Tart Sisters have sold their delicious treats across Sydney, but the time since setting up a store in Ashfield has been the happiest of Felicity Peel’s life.
“We started out as wholesalers, and we still are, but we opened the little shop not long ago because among other things we always had people poking their heads in wanting to buy something,” she said.
“We also sell the organic eggs we use, local honey, Brickfields sourdough, local butter, and a lot of other fresh items.
“I opened with my sister, but she is off making boats now, so I’m the only sister in the name who works here regularly,” Ms Peel said.

For $5, the roasted pumpkin and goat’s cheese tart is well worth a try and one that Ms Peel said is one of her favourites.
“With fresh ingredients, it makes a fantastic afternoon meal, or a light treat.”
Similarly, the goat’s cheese, roast tomato and basil tart is a bestseller.
Ms Peel said the pastry is made with seeded mustard and thyme, and filled with Woodside goats cheese, her own oven-roasted tomatoes, basil, then an organic egg and cream custard.
For sweets, there’s no going past the salted caramel brownie ($3.50), but then again the little lemon curd cake ($3.50) is hard to say no to.
The fresh peaches adorning the ($4.50) yoghurt cake are a flavour burst.
“I try to make the stock favourites, the cakes people come specially for, but it’s great that I get to experiment lots too,” Ms Peel said.
