Police say a man at the centre of an alleged gunpoint carjacking is dangerous, and has an “extensive and colourful” criminal background.

On Tuesday afternoon police issued an arrest warrant for 42-year-old Glenn Robert Wilson, after he stole a man’s car at gunpoint in Figtree this morning, April 9.

Wollongong Police crime manager Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said Wilson approached a 48-year-old man in the driveway of his St George Avenue home, and threatened him with a handgun before stealing a silver Range Rover.

“The vehicle was located at Berkeley [afterwards], and we had the assistance of the dog squad and PolAir up in the sky,” he said.

“We’ve taken the vehicle and it’s going to be forensically tested, but we can’t locate Mr Wilson.”

The incident came as a shock to residents of the usually quiet St George Avenue, but Det Insp Ainsworth said it was not a random attack, and that Wilson and the victim were known to each other.

“I’ll get it out there now, this isn’t a random attack as such, it’s a targeted incident,” he said.

Police say Wilson has ties to the Berkeley, Barrack Heights and Warilla areas, and have urged people to report any sightings of the wanted man, who was last seen wearing a grey jumper and a black baseball cap.

“He’s got an extensive criminal history and we’ll put the warning out there now that he is dangerous and we are seeking information on his whereabouts,” Det Insp Ainsworth said.

“People, if they know where he is, let us know by contacting Crimestoppers or police, but do not approach him.”

St George Avenue resident Emily Robinson said she returned home this morning to find police in bulletproof vests on the usually quiet street.

“They were fingerprinting the gate just across the road and then they asked if I’d heard or seen anything,” she said. “I wasn’t here but it’s just so bizarre. It’s crazy.”

Ms Robinson, who just moved into her home a month ago, said she was shocked such a brazen attack could happen in the Figtree area.

“There’s a school right across the road,” she said. “I find it weird because you have to come up a lot of different streets to get into our street. It’s very strange.”
