A man accused of intimidating a Western Sydney family and screaming “F*ck the Muslims. You’re dead. I’ll f*cking kill you” has been refused bail.
Sharaf-Deen Yusuf, 43, is accused of threatening and intimidating a family who were enjoying a picnic at Bulli Tops on the weekend, before doing burnouts around them and driving off.
Yusuf appeared in Wollongong Local Court via audiovisual link today where Magistrate Michael Stoddart refused his application for bail.
He became irate when Magistrate Stoddart commented on the “very disturbing allegations” he’d been accused of.
Yusuf said he no longer wanted to be represented by Legal Aid and accused his defence lawyer of discrimination.
“LegalAid has never represented me properly due to my race and the fact I am a black man,” he said.
“I am asking for a private lawyer, he is not representing me properly because I am black and I am a Muslim. I don’t think he likes me.”
Despite the fact he is a Muslim himself, Yusuf is accused of harassing a group of 20 family members at Bulli Tops on April 7, screaming anti-Islamic remarks at them.
According to police facts, the accused began taking photos of the victims’ cars when they arrived at the picnic area.
One of the victims approached the man to ask what he was doing, and when he didn’t respond the victim tugged lightly on Yusuf’s shirt, thinking he may be deaf.
Police allege Yusuf then yelled “Don’t f*cking touch me, I’ll f*cking kill you. You’ll be dead.”
Two of the victims’ family members approached when they saw Yusuf screaming. As they approached, Yusuf is alleged to have started screaming again, saying “F*ck the Muslims. You’re dead. I’ll f*cking kill you”.
Police say he then ran to the driver side of his car, and the victims believed he was going to get a weapon.
The victims followed him to the car and tried to restrain him, but let him go after receiving scratches to their arms.
Yusuf jumped into his vehicle, where he allegedly drove around in a circle three times “very fast”, yelling “F*ck the Muslims. I’m going to kill you” repeatedly.
Police say the victims were within a metre of the car when Yusuf began driving around in circles, while children as young as two were just two metres away. Due to the wet, muddy conditions of the area, police say Yusuf could have lost control of the vehicle and driven into one of the victims or children.
Yusuf left the scene in his car and the victims called police. But just five minutes later, he allegedly returned to the scene.
Police say he drove a few laps around the victims before he was arrested. On inspection of Yusuf’s vehicle, police found a boxcutter knife and a hammer.
He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with intimidation and drive manner dangerous.
Due to Yusuf’s outburst at court on Monday, his appearance was cut short. His case was adjourned to April 23.
