The trend towards high-rise buildings in the heart of Wollongong is showing no signs of abating with an 18-storey complex - which includes a hotel targeting business clientele - before council.

A new high-rise building is being slated for the Wollongong CBD with city council considering an application for an 18-storey, mixed-use facility.
Anya Solutions submitted a revised development application to Wollongong Council outlining plans to construct the building that will feature 75 residential units at 24-30 Kenny St.
The proposal also includes a 56-room hotel which will be a combination of single rooms and one and two bedroom suites.
The complex would have a cafe, which would be available to the public, communal open space and pool and 118 car spaces on the ground and basement level, while there will be additional spaces for bikes and motorbikes.
The applicants believe the proposal addresses a direct tourism need in the heart of the city while suggesting it would most likely cater for business clientele.
“Anya Solutions and their consultants have identified a tourism need for a hotel and mixed-use development outcome within this particular site,” the application said.
“The target market will likely be business-oriented tourism in terms of predominant visitor occupation, although hotel suites have been provided to accommodate families and those seeking visitor accommodation for leisure purposes.
“The proposed three star hotel will provide some much needed tourist accommodation within the City Centre of Wollongong.”
The Kenny St proposal continues the push for high-rise buildings in the area with similar-sized developments nearing completion at nearby sites including 35 Kenny St and 38 Atchison St.
Last month, a 17-storey development on Ellen St was before council which featured 272 apartments and a 100-child childcare centre, while two nine-storey apartment blocks have been mooted for Gladstone Ave on the westerly side of the nearby Wollongong Station.
