Kenny Street Fruit and Deli site set for major 17-storey, 272-apartment development

It’s a site that became synonymous for serving up fresh fruit and veg, but now a lot in the heart of Wollongong could become a two-tower complex with a childcare centre.

House prices likely to fall for ‘at least the next few months’

A development application has been lodged with Wollongong Council which will see a 17-storey multi-use complex built on top of the now-closed Kenny Street Fruit and Deli site.

The site at 30 Ellen St, Wollongong, is a stone’s throw to the east of Wollongong Station, with the proposal lodged by Level 33 Property Developers showcasing a two residential tower building incorporating 272 apartments.

The proposal has also outlined commercial and retail spaces, a 100-child childcare centre on the third floor and four levels of parking.

The development application will be remain on public exhibition until Thursday, July 7.

The capital investment value is in the vicinity of $80 million, and as such, the Southern Regional Planning Panel will have the final say on whether it gets the go-ahead.

The area proposed for the new block is proving popular with developers with several other developments going on exhibition, having recently been approved or starting constructing close by.

That includes two nine-storey apartment blocks mooted for Gladstone Ave on the westerly side of the train tracks.

Kingdom Towers have lodged an application for a 94-apartment building at 7-15 Gladstone Ave which will be on exhibition until Thursday.

The apartment block is proposed to be built on the site next to the Wollongong Lighthouse Church and would feature commercial space and a cafe.

Right next door, at 17-19 Gladstone Ave, a 36-apartment building featuring a level one swimming pool was on exhibition until earlier this month.
