With a dedication to training, a focus on teamwork and a humble attitude, Hunter Hosking has all the attributes of an excellent rugby union captain.
It is no wonder then that the North Rocks star captained his under-12 teams this year at club, district, and state school carnival levels.
The 12-year-old, who has played rugby since he was four, said good captains needed to be “very loud, commanding and be ‘besties’ with the referee during the game”.
He currently plays for North Rocks Junior Rugby Union Club, Eastwood Junior Rugby Union, Christ the King’s 7s team, the Primary Sports Diocese of Parramatta and for Mackillop in the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association.
He played scrum half for NSW at the Interstate Championships held in Adelaide during the October school holidays, and the team finished undefeated.
Hunter was selected as part of the 22-strong NSW Primary Schools Sports Association’s under-12 squad after trials in Mudgee.
“I really don’t know how I was selected in the team with all the talent seen at the trials,” he said.
“I felt very honoured.”
Hunter said he was “really happy” with the way he and his teammates played over the championships.
“We all had a fantastic weekend,” he said. “We played five games and were undefeated. We never even had a try scored against us in all the games.”
Hunter said he hoped to represent his country one day.
“I would love to make the Wallabies,” he said. ”Until then I’m going to train and train and train.”
