FAIRFIELD City Council could have a stake in $150 million of government funding that’ll be used to build upgrades throughout the Western Sydney Parkland region.
The proposal will help the State Government plan for growth in western Sydney, as developments spawn around the airport being built at Badgerys Creek.
Details of the ‘liveability program’s’ funding were announced by federal and state ministers earlier this month. The Federal and NSW governments have committed to putting in $60 million each, while eight local councils will contribute a share of $30 million – including Liverpool City and Fairfield City councils.
This leaves Fairfield City Council with $15 million to spend on “recreational facilities, open space upgrades, public domain activation and amenity improvements”.
Planning documents put before the council have identified Fairfield Showground as “the priority project” for the funding. The council has said it is investing $23m in the showground development, to cover lighting, fields and other equipment.
The Advance revealed in July that Fairfield City was hand-picked to fast track a review of the city’s layout – a move intended to help it plan for upcoming developments. It is a growing priority as Western Sydney Parklands has been set a 20-year target to “deliver at least 184,500 homes”.

The Mayors of the eight local councils eligible for funding released a joint statement, which described the funding as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”.
“The funding will enable us to deliver iconic projects that strengthen our region and provide community spaces and infrastructure to improve the lives of the 1.5 million people who will call the Western Parkland City home within 20 years,” they said.
The eight councils eligible for funding are Fairfield, Liverpool, Blue Mountains, Camden, Campbelltown, Wollondilly, Hawkesbury and Penrith.
Correction, September 18: An earlier version of this article claimed part of the funding would go to the grandstand proposed at Fairfield Showgrand, which is reliant on separate funding. This funding will mostly go towards other projects being developed at Fairfield Showground.
