$5 million complex could be built at Fairfield Showground

A 1000-SEAT grandstand complex could be built at Fairfield Showground. It would feature a corporate box, change rooms and toilets too. But it all depends on the approval of a multi-million dollar grant.

A 1000-SEAT grandstand complex could be built at Fairfield Showground. It would feature a corporate box, change rooms and toilets too.

But for the grandstand to be built, the local council’s application for a multi-million dollar grant would need to be approved.

The proposed change rooms will make it possible to have sporting events for men and women simultaneously – a rarity in Western Sydney, while the addition of a corporate box will draw both big matches and sponsorship deals.

“It will have all the facilities that meets the highest levels ... which means it will bring the big teams out here,” said Frank Carbone, Mayor of Fairfield City.

“Without a corporate box, you won’t get the (big) games, because that’s how they fund it.

“You’ve got your sponsors and they’re going to want their corporate boxes,” he said.

The grandstand, which would be located near the main entrance and overlook the Elite Turf football field, will require the City Council’s application for a $5 million grant to be approved by the state’s Office of Sport.

Another $1.25 million would have to be kicked in by the council – pushing the total lot of funds to $6.25 million – for any grant the council wins over a million dollars.

The NSW Office of Sport will notify winners before March 2019 – ahead of state government elections.

About 33 local government areas can apply for a share of $100 million under the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund. The maximum amount each can be awarded is $5 million.
