Fairfield Showground is set to become an outstanding cultural and sporting hub that gives some of Sydney’s grandest venues a run for their money.
The Fairfield Advance can exclusively reveal a visual plan of the proposal endorsed by Fairfield City Council’s outcomes committee, that was due to go before the full council last night
Detailed designs for the first stage of the redevelopment include an international size football field and all-weather synthetic field.
The plans also include a festival and events area that can also be used for AFL or cricket, an awning-covered area for events, a stage and associated amenities building.
A new pavilion building will accommodate functions, markets and events, while the nearby market square will be revamped.
The existing showground function centre is slated for improvements to the facade, as well as an interior refit and extension to the grandstand seating.
The plan also identifies additional space for overflow parking for big events, community gardens and walking and cycling tracks in the bush surrounds.
Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone said the showground’s redevelopment was incredibly important for the local community.
“It’s an investment in the future for our community,” Mr Carbone said. “The redevelopment will allow us to bring some of the biggest festivals and events to southwest Sydney, as well as major sporting events.”
A spokeswoman said the council expected to have approvals for the design by early to mid-2018, when a schedule would be formulated for works.
“The showground is one of the most important facilities in our city,” Mr Carbone said.
“We’re creating a place that will bring people together for years to come.”
