MAJOR sporting events, concerts and festivals could all be part of the future use for the much-loved Fairfield Showground at Prairiewood.

Already the hub of the community, housing many clubs and welcoming thousands for annual celebrations, Fairfield Council hopes to redevelop the showground into a regional multicultural and sporting complex.

The public exhibition of the Fairfield Showground Draft Plan of Management has begun, allowing the community to have its say on the council’s proposed plans and uses for the site.

Stage one of the planned redevelopment includes an international-size football field and an all-weather synthetic field, festival and events area and AFL/cricket field, a lighting upgrade for the new football field and installation of high-standard lighting for all playing fields.

An extended awning area would be constructed for festivals, consisting of an undercover area of 2070sq m.

An open-sided stage with roof would accommodate concerts, festivals, field games and outdoor cinema.

Future stages of the development could include upgrades to some of the community clubs’ buildings, as well as the construction of an indoor sports and cultural centre.

The council’s plan of management said “it is anticipated that the indoor sport and cultural centre will consist of up to four enclosed playing areas, grandstand seating, (and an) internal kiosk with external serving windows”.

The centre would include a stage with back-of-house facilities, lettable office spaces and a large group educational kitchen.

It would allow for a range of sports to be played, including badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball, as well as be a venue for medium-scale concerts, conferences and cooking spaces.

Mayor Frank Carbone said the 32.66ha site had the potential to become the epicentre of sports and culture in Fairfield City.
