Clearways proposed for Cabramatta, posing $263 fines

All-day clearways “will soon be introduced” on main Cabramatta roads, putting locals at risk of $263 fines as the state government tries to streamline the city’s traffic.

All-day clearways “will soon be introduced” on main Cabramatta roads, putting locals at risk of $263 fines as the state government tries to streamline the city’s traffic.

The clearways will be on Cabramatta Road East and Cabramatta Road West, in a proposal by the NSW government that aims to ease traffic flow for the 22,000 people who drive through the city’s centre every day.

They will take effect in both directions of the city’s 5.9km arterial road, from 6am to 7pm on weekdays, and from 9am to 6pm on weekends, provided the proposal is passed in its current form.

Cars parked in the clearways face steep fines of $263, and risk being towed – at a cost of another $199, to be paid by the vehicle’s owner.

The clearways will run along the full 5.9 kilometre length of the road, from Hume Highway to Elizabeth Drive, ultimately spilling across three suburbs.

Cabramatta faces both traffic congestion and parking constraints. The main roads are central to the city, so much so that they’re divided by its railway station – where a cluster of businesses trade. With clearways in effect during trading hours, fewer customers could stop to shop at these local businesses.

But NSW Transport has a mandate to follow when it comes to rolling out clearways. The State Government is spending $121 million on introducing clearways in an effort to alleviate gridlock traffic. Since 2013, clearways have either been extended or introduced to over 450 kilometres of Sydney roads.

“Roads and Maritime has investigated business parking along this corridor and found there is sufficient business parking available in side streets,” a spokesperson of NSW Transport said.

“A single parked car can significantly reduce road capacity and cause major delays on busy road corridors, so it is important to ensure all lanes are available to improve journey reliability for motorists.”

The spokesperson pointed to the indented parking bay between Lord and Boyd streets, and in the section between Cabramatta Road West and John Street, near Cabramatta Town Centre.

News of the proposed clearways come a fortnight after the Advance revealed Fairfield City Council’s latest tool in parking enforcement: an unmarked Toyota Camry that has a duo of cameras to identify cars to fine.

Members of the community can lend their support or voice their concerns on the proposed clearways at Cabramatta Plaza on Thursday, September 20, from 3pm to 6pm, where a team from NSW Transport will be available to discuss the proposed clearways.

Alternatively, they can send feedback via email to the address clearways@rms.nsw.gov.au.
