Fairfield City has been chosen by the State Government to have the review of the city’s layout fast-tracked, a move that will free up $900,000 and could result in far reaching changes.
The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has offered the city a $2.5 million grant to have a review of the city’s future blueprint finished by mid 2020 – a year before originally planned.
The Local Environment Plan review will identify improvements to housing, traffic flow and public transportation, and investigate where new amenities will be best positioned, such as libraries and parks.
Mayor Frank Carbone said fast tracking the review will help Fairfield prepare for the predicted boom in industry, as the city nestles between growing Parramatta and the new airport being built at Badgerys Creek.
“The people of our city never looked west for work previously,” Cr Carbone said.
“Everybody goes to the city for work, but now there are other opportunities.
“We need to prepare for those opportunities.”
Fairfield was always scheduled to have the blueprint reviewed, but having it fast tracked will free up $900,000.
The review comes as Fairfield’s population continues to increase.
Cr Carbone says 210,000 people currently call Fairfield City their home which is an increase of 11,000 compared with 2016 census data.
