A 16-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter and driving with drugs in his blood after a 17-year-old boy died during a police pursuit in the state’s west.
Police were called to a reported robbery at a Narromine service station around 11.15pm on February 27, before officers were told four teens had left the scene in an SUV prior to their arrival.
Almost an hour later, officers patrolling the Mitchell Hwy about 15km from Nyngan attempted to stop the SUV.
In the second of two pursuits, road spikes were successfully deployed near Coolabah, before police officers found the car – an SUV reported stolen from a Blayney home the day prior – had rolled on Weir Rd in Bourke.
Officers immediately rendered assistance to the four occupants but one boy, aged 17, died at the scene.
Two other boys – aged 13 and 16 – were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Bourke Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 14-year-old boy was flown to Sydney Children’s hospital in a serious condition.
The boys aged 13 and 16 were charged with a number of offences after being released from hospital.
Earlier today, the 16-year-old boy was charged with the additional offences of manslaughter and driving with drugs in his blood over the incident.
He will next face a children’s court on July 10.
