Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire which left two people with life-threatening injuries, destroyed a home in Dubbo’s CBD and caused extensive damage to a nearby business on Wednesday morning.
At about 1.40am a 43-year-old man and 61-year-old woman were rescued from inside the home on Church Street as fire engulfed.
A member of the public noticed the house was on fire and rushed to the nearby Dubbo Police Station for help.
Orana Mid-Western Police District Commander Superintendent Peter McKenna said three officers rushed to the home and forced entry to rescue the man inside.
“They tried to go in a second time, however they were forced back due to the intensity of the fire,” he said.
Fire and Rescue NSW Dubbo Station Commander Chris Cusack said an off-duty paramedic reportedly helped police revive the man at the scene.
“Shortly after the second occupant was removed from the home the roof did collapse, it was very, very touch and go,” Mr Cusack said.
“By the time we removed the second individual the paramedics had arrived so it was a really good team effort by all emergency services involved.”
Superintendent McKenna said the cause of the fire would most likely be known on Thursday.
“My understanding is both occupants are still currently in hospital in a life-threatening condition,” he said.
“The fire can’t be investigated thoroughly until we have structural engineers come and have a look at it to make sure it’s safe for the investigators to go in.”
Neighbours Tanisha Dixon and David Homer witnessed the fire and said the man and woman were lucky to have got out alive.
“We ran over, we thought someone might have needed help and as we got over there the police and everyone started running over,” Ms Dixon said.
“It was gushing through, you couldn’t even see the police station. It just looked like a whole big heap of fog.”
