A Fairfield medical centre has treated a patient diagnosed with the COVID-19 coronavirus and is recommending other visitors to the centre to get a check up immediately.

Patients who visited Ware Street Medical and Dental Centre in Fairfield from February 27 are being advised to visit a general practice immediately for a health check.

“There was a patient that presented to a general practice in Fairfield, but any staff or patients who have in contact with the case are being contacted directly by the public health unit staff,” Kerry Chant said, the chief health officer of NSW Health.

“There is no ongoing risk to the practice or the broader community to this case.

“We’ve seen a number of social media posts telling people to avoid the practice or the area. This is incorrect.”

NSW Health did not provide the patient’s age or gender, or reveal how they contracted the virus. A spokesperson confirmed the patient’s presentation.

The medical centre, located at 3/37-41 Ware St, Fairfield, appears to be operating as normal. An employee answered the phone, but they declined to answer questions on the coronavirus case presentation.

Ms Chant warned against the spread of false and misleading information on social media, and urged people to verify social posts with information against Commonwealth and NSW Health sites.

“This is an infectious disease outbreak at a time when the role of social media has come to the forefront,” she said, at a press conference held on March 4.

“Please verify your information. I urge you not to send it on if you haven’t done that fact checking process first.”
